Wise Words

Life is all about choices and balance.  That's why I've been MIA.  Writing this blog brings me such joy, so I can state, without a shadow of a doubt, I will be back full time once my plate has more space.

In the meantime... You know I love a good quote. Here are some that keep me going.

Now that I have pasted nearly every quote on my Pinterest board...

Cheers!

Happy Spring

Winter is over!  While the season was rather mild it stills give me great thrill to bid adieu.  Hello season of cherry blossoms, and tulips, and lilacs, and peonies, and lily of the valley, and bright green grass, and warm sunshine, and gentle rain.  It's wonderful to see you again!

This dining room is the perfect space to host a "Welcome Back Spring" luncheon.

So pretty.

Cheers!

Lovin'

My Covet du Jours.

This collage, by Jan Eleni, is genius!  It's the perfect way to blend your two selves: mom and decorator.

I am a sailboat kind of girl, but my tune would change if this yacht, Prometej, was my (motor) vessel.

Seriously!!!
These photographs are by the talented Douglas Friedman.  To view his portfolio click here.

So clever and cute - a book dock charger for an iPhone or iPad, by Rich Neeley Designs.

One of my dreams is to publish a book.  My kids like my stores and poems, but accompanying illustrations would capture their attention.  DC based artist Becca Kallem works with many mediums, but her animal illustrations are my favorite.  Her charming and whimsical use of pencil and watercolor would bring my characters to life, exactly as I imagined them.  (Well, her work is even better than I could envision.)

See you Monday to announce the winner of the giveaway!

Pity Party

Do you ever just have one of those days where nothing in particular goes wrong but you are still in a wretched mood?  Today I am sinking into a pond of self pity.  It's too early for a cocktail. I can't go to bed before nap time is over.  I could turn to chocolate but even that does not seem like the answer.

It looks like the only solution is to remember what I am thankful for.  Maybe if I put it out there it will help? Here goes...

I am thankful for...
My amazingly patient and kind husband.
My adorable, funny, healthy boys, who make me smile everyday.
My sweet blind dog that still sees the world exactly the same.
Laughing.
Laughing at myself.
Making others laugh.
Laughing with friends and family.
Knowing I can turn to Botox and Restylane when the laugh lines get too bad.
Flowers.
Readers of CDJ.
The few moments in my life that are quite.
Reading stories while snuggling with my kids.
Being a stay-at-home mom (even though some days it's really difficult).
Having a passion for something and the courage to pursue it.
The opportunity to spend much of my life by the water.
A really comfortable bed.
A walk on a beautiful day.
Great health insurance and modern day medicine.
Rare moments of wisdom.
Finally believing "what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger."
Fresh herbs.
A glass of fantastic wine or bubbly.
A brand new coat of paint.
The smell of Autumn.
Talking to someone who understands what you've been through.
Christmas carols and anything associated with the magical season.
Great books.
The first snow.
The last snow.
Knowing that a part of me, albeit a very small part, believes everything works itself out.

I feel a little better.  What are you thankful for?

Cheers!

Campaign Bath Vanity

Now that my laptop is FINALLY home, I am catching up on all my daily blog reads.  The DIY queen of the blogosphere, Jenny from Little Green Notebook, wowed me once again with her simple, yet brilliant DIY campaign style side tables.   Additionally, it sounds like she going to whip up a little campaign style kitchen island. Seriously, I am waiting with bated breath to see that beauty!

Of course the wheels in my head began to turn... how can I incorporate a little campaign in an unexpected place.  Unfortunately, nowhere.  Then the light bulb went off.  My mom and I are just completing the renovation of her master bath.  Next on the list is the upstairs guest bath.  Instead of a traditional bathroom vanity, we could use a campaign dresser or desk?  Eureka!

Imagine this Craig's List campaign desk painted in a glossy white or a rich cobalt blue and the brass hardware cleaned...

A hole could be cut on the left side for the sink and the depth of the drawers reduced.  Next, have a marble top cut.  Push a Lucite stool or chair under the right side and you have a small dressing area.

For an option that would require less work, insert the sink on the right side.  Still have a Carrera marble top cut to size. Then you could add a "bar" under the drawer for hand towels or add a shelf to the bottom for a towel basket. Examples:

This kitchen is the perfect inspiration for the bathroom I have in mind:

So are these bathrooms!

This was fun!  I could dream up uses for different types of furniture all day, but reality is beckoning.

Cheers!

If You Give a Girl a Flower...

Aside from Shelter magazines and blogs, the majority of the literature I read is of the children's variety.  If you are familiar with the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series that pretty much sums up how I operate.  Basically, it's stream of consciousnesses.

Allow me to explain how my mind works with an example from this weekend.  We were out of town for three weeks, hence the sporadic posts. Typically the homecoming includes unpacking, loads of laundry, stocking the empty cupboards and refrigerator and cleaning the house/yard and getting back into a routine.

Ready for a trip in my head? I make a shopping list which includes flowers and plants to bring the house back to life.  Once the flowers are arranged and the plants are potted, I decided were to place them.  That leads to moving other objects around.  Before you know it all the built-ins have been rearranged.  Stepping back to observe the displays, I decide some furniture needs shifting.  Of course, that results in rehanging pictures - and this is just a Friday night in my house.  God love my husband for tolerating my insanity. As a result of that typical evening a whole list of new projects are swirling in my head.   Here is a sampling:

Top of the list - buy a new camera.  Then perhaps I will actually remember to take pictures of all my projects.   (Please send me any recommendations.)

A bedroom refresh - I'm thinking of painting the dresser, a new skirt for the table the TV is on, some new throw pillows, dust ruffle, and quilt, a new desk chair, paint or buy some new art, as I moved some pieces to the newly created wall gallery downstairs.

My bedroom is painted Restoration Hardware Silver Sage.  Some variation of orange paint might do the trick for the dresser.  This is Pratt and Lambert 1849.  If you have a color rec I am all ears!

Looking for a less expensive version of this WS Home Chair.  Ballard Design has one that's the right price, but not color/finish I am looking for.

For the new TV table skirt, I want something simple like this by Nathan Turner.

Tailored like this skirt by Amanda Nesbit

Regarding the quilt and bed skirt - I just need new white ones, as the current linens  are fading.
Fabric for the throw pillows is TBD, but that just means visits to some favorite shops :-)

On to the art... I do not have anything specific in mind. When I buy art it's usually on a whim - a piece must catch my eye.

I heart Hugo Guinness!  Any of his prints are on my wish list.

I've mentioned Janet Hill before, but just adore her work.  I can justify buying myself one of her prints.

Do you have any artists you love?  Please share!

There are many, many  more projects on the list, some of which I will share with you this week.

Cheers!

*EDIT - While at the beach I pulled my neck - could not move, was in terrible pain, and missed 2 days in the sand.  My husband insisted I go to the ER.  It was a muscle spasm.  The doctor put me on pain killers and muscle relaxers and ordered I not move for a few days.  Recovery was slow, so sadly we had to cancel our trip to NYC and come home early.  I tell you this because I need to give credit to my amazing husband -the brawn of my Friday night projects.

Space: Modern Comforts

If I had to describe my personal style, I would say it's traditional with contemporary hints.  Now that's not to say that I do not appreciate and admire spaces that employs different types of design.  Occasionally I wish for the courage to incorporate that admiration in my home and create a room totally unconventional for myself.  After many attempts I have come to accept that I will not feel at home unless I am true to my style.  However  I am thrilled when I am presented with an opportunity to help others with varying tastes.

This image from the newest addition of Lonny caught my eye. It's the apartment of artist Martine Chaisson.  The ying and the yang of elegant  femininity  juxtaposed to the modern masculinity marries the space in perfect unison. The crystal chandelier, the delicate sheers and the shimmery tones of the paint color allow for an inviting room while staying true to the more contemporary elements.  Well done!

Cheers!
